An air of sadness clouded over round four of the
Shelby Can Am championship following the passing of founder
Carroll Shelby at the ripe old age of 89.
Although he will perhaps be better known as the creator of the
iconic Cobra, he was also the designer of the Shelby Can Am cars
which came to South Africa just over a decade ago.
Twice former champion Rui Campos (Q8 Oils) was the fastest in
qualifying and claimed pole with a time of 1 minute 13.778, a
tad more than 3/10ths faster than Brian Algar in the Hollard/Execuline
example. Row two had Alan Eve (Pilot) a smidge faster than
Andrew Strike (Strike1) and the top six was rounded off by
Thomas Reib (Jägermeister) and local hopeful Ferdi van Niekerk
junior in the Motorola Cordless Phones backed car.
