Day of Doubles at Vodacom

It was a day of doubles at the Vodacom Roadshow national meeting at the Aldo Scribante circuit on Sunday. The event, the first time Sunday racing has been held in Port Elizabeth, brought the curtain down on a bumper motorsport weekend for Eastern Cape enthusiasts. The VW Algoa Rally – won by Team Castrol Toyota pair Serge Damseaux and Guy Hodgson – and the Vodacom outing provided for plenty of drama and action. On a warm and cloudy day championship leader George Ferreira and Donovan Roscoe dominated the Vodacom Sports Prototype event. Kempton Park based Ferreira and Bryanston based Roscoe finished first and second in both heats, with Ferreira consolidating his championship lead. Race one saw Ferreira under tremendous pressure from Roscoe, but the championship leader had a little breathing space in race two. Veteran Bernard Tilanus and Neil Lobb swapped third and fourth places in the two heats, with Clive Kennerley and Melville Priest sharing fifth place finishes. Vodacom Isondo Sports 2000 championship leader Chad Francis also consolidated his position at the top of the leaderboard. He won both heats ahead of Zakhele Zonele with Louis Kupai and Simon Mosely sharing third places. Midrand youngster Dale Knez edged ahead in the Formula GTi championship with another of the day’s doubles. Knez won heat one ahead of Middelburg youngster Marco da Cunha and Midrand rival Barry Ingle to continue a good run of recent form. Ingle followed Knez home in race two, but lost a little ground in the title race. Local lad Darren Murphy gave the home crowd something to cheer about when he won the opening heat of the Formula Vee event. Murphy was followed home by championship contenders Trevor Smith, Lee Thompson and Welkom veteran Dennis Johns. Murphy could not repeat the dose in race two and came home in fourth place. The win went to Pretoria based Tompson who was chased home by Smith and Johns, with the Formula Vee event the only category not to produce a double winner. It came as no surprise when Capetonian Johan Fourie won both races in the Sascar outing. In his last seven Sascar and Wesbank V8 Championship outings the talented Fourie has won every race. Fourie took heat one ahead of fellow Capetonians JJ Maree and Kosie Swanepoel with veterans Peter Lindenberg and George Fouche fourth and fifth. Lindenberg slipped into second place in heat two, followed by Swanepoel, Maree and Fouche.
