The Nissan engined VSP Sports Cars make their Debut at Kyalami
May 2002

After the disappointment of missing the first round of the National Championship at Kyalami we are proud to be able to at last race in front of our local fans. If the racing proves to be as exciting as the previous two rounds, you are in for another treat of racing.

The championship this far has delivered winners in Cape Town, Bernard Tilanus (Platinum Asset) and Don Roscoe (Optimum Racing Developments) and in Port Elizabeth Neil Lobb (DK Woodcraft) and Bernard Tilanus (Platinum Asset).

There is already a titanic battle to be the fist winner of the Nissan powered VSP series. Neil Lobb leads with 89 points, followed by Tilanus on 82, Roscoe on 66, but with 20 points for first place, 17 for second and 15 for third, things will and change rapidly. Add to this the fact the defending champion missed the last round, and is going to exact his revenge, we have an explosive situation. 20 points cover the next 8 places and 5 of those know the podium well!

As a result of the technical delays in getting the new engine into all the cars, it has been agreed that each driver will be able to discard his worst race day! This complication means that ever driver may have some agonising decisions to make at the end of the year, and banking all available points is paramount.

The ex winners who are out there with a point to prove are Francois Gerber (The Tool Shop), past champion, Allan Eve (Ode’s Autobody), young gun Melvill Priest (Macromed), Clive Kennerley (Standox). But as usual there is no love lost down the ranks and the numbers of personal duels going on are legion. Also remember to watch out for the veterans (50 and over) with their “Green” numbers. In that category, new comer Allan Green (DK Laminates), had a storming first event at East London, and not only wants to upset the proverbial apple cart, but also wants to show the youngsters a thing or two.

Lap records have obviously been sent at each racetrack, and Don Roscoe (Optimum Racing Developments) has set them both, watch him closely!

Lastly, we are very proud of the beautiful turnout of our cars, we would like to know what you feel about our class. Please visit our Website at www.vsp.co.za, and drop us an email to vicky@vsp.co.za
