Round 8 - Phakisa Freeway, Welkom

With just two rounds of the Vodacom Sports Prototype national championship remaining, the points gap between championship leader Neil Lobb and George Ferreira has been whittled down to a mere 8-points.
Qualifying saw VSP racing's 'wild child' Melvill Priest planted the Revlon 24-seven car firmly on pole position with a demon lap over half a second faster than Lobb. The latter driving the car usually raced by Bernard Tilanus after his usual DK Woodcraft liveried mount was found to be down on power.
George Ferreira (PAK 2000) headed the second row ahead of an inspired Dave Beatte (Steiner hygiene/Fed-Ex) while Francois Gerber (Autohaus Paint & Panel) and Donovan Roscoe (Optimum Racing Developments) completed the top six.
Race 1 was one of sheer brilliance as Priest led throughout, but under constant attack from Lobb who dived down the inside at the hairpin behind the pits an number of times only to have Priest slam the door in his face on each occasion. Lobb couldn't afford to take any risks either as Ferreira and Gerber were tucked under his rear wing and waiting for an opportunity to pick up a place.
Beattie spun himself out of contention early on and Alan Eve (Shell/Odes Autobody) put in a steady drive to claim fifth ahead of Roscoe.
Race two was another thriller. This time Ferreira led from start to finish with Priest snapping at his heels for the entire 10-laps. Lobb was few car lengths back and under pressure from Gerber until the latter disappeared from the fray just before half distance. That allowed Beattie to take a morale boosting fourth ahead of Roscoe and Clive Kennerley (Standox).
Further back there was a good battle for the minor placings, but it all came to a crunching end when Richard Wood spun exiting the hairpin and was torpedoed amidships by Steve Desilla (Greyhound).
The penultimate round takes place at Port Elizabeth's Aldo Scribante circuit on 01 November with the final at AA Kyalami three weeks later. |
