With the first half of the Vodacom Sports Prototype championship over, Garth Waberski (Dache Imports) holds a narrow eight point lead over former champion Francois Gerber (Autohaus). This follows a successful appeal by Waberski after his exclusion from the last round at Zwartkops.
With all drivers strapped into identical Nissan V6 powered cars and all using control Goodyear slicks, the championship is wide open
Reigning champion Neil Lobb (DK Woodcraft) is third in the points log following the controversial Zwartkops round and needs a win and for his rivals to have a bad day if he is to stay in the title race. With 20 points on offer for a win, there is still hope of staying in touch with the leaders.
Alan Eve (Powerseal Gaskets) is one of a number of drivers who could upset the applecart. Like Gerber, he has also finished every race in the points and is ten points behind Lobb. Pretoria student, Ruan Pretorius (Nusol/John Abbot Motorsport) has had a brilliant debut season in the series and a third place at Zwartkops lifted him to fifth place in the championship.
DK Office Furniture driver Alan Green missed Zwartkops after undergoing surgery and is desperate to be on the grid at Kyalami. “I’m having a good season and need to get some points back,” he commented.
Colin Frost has had some hiccups, during the year, but the Strocam driver has kept smiling and lies seventh, just eight points behind Green. A further nine points back is former British Formula Ford racer Dave Beattie. He missed a few races due to a lack of funds, but with Kyalami being a happy hunting ground, is determined to be at the front. “The establishment needs a shake up!!” he boasted.
Porsche racer Rui Campos makes his second appearance in the series following an encouraging debut at the last round. Another driver with high hopes is Richard Wood whose car has undergone a complete suspension rebuild at the DK Auto workshop.
Monte Carlo based Jonathan Finch’s (Solution 21) first VSP race lasted all of 200 metres before he was an innocent victim in a spectacular four car shunt at the last Kyalami round and with a fully rebuilt car underneath him is good bet for a top six finish in what will effectively be his first VSP race. |
