Top class motorsport returned to Kyalami for round five of the popular Vodacom Power Tour and as usual the Shelby Can-Am contenders put on a good show. Following his maiden win at the previous round in Port Elizabeth, a fired up Darryn Lobb (DK Woodcraft) claimed pole position by a mere 7/100ths of a second quicker than his father Neil. Donovan Roscoe (Stanley) lined up third, but was over a second off pole and had Rui Campos (Carrera/Boltt) alongside. Roscoe started from the front in PE, but a first corner shunt left him with more work than expected. “The car’s nothing like it was in PE, so don’t expect much today,” he mused. Completing the top six were Ruan Pretorius (Biogen) and veteran racer Alan Eve in the Powerseal Gaskets entry. Although the pace at the front was hard and fast, race one was relatively trouble free, but an exciting finish saw Darryn hold off Neil in a sprint to the line to win by ,08 hundredths of a second with Roscoe four seconds behind in third. Pretorius kept his nose clean to take a solid fourth with a three second advantage over Eve who in turn was comfortably clear of sixth placed Campos, the latter having held third early in the race. With dusk approaching fast, race two was shortened to seven laps and this time it Neil showed Darryn exactly who is boss in the Revolution Racing team as he won by nearly two seconds while Campos was much happier with third place. “It was difficult to see. There was so much cement dust on the track and the low sun made it impossible to place the car – do you know why they call it Sunset Corner?” quipped Lobb at the end. Multiple Superkart champion Veron Pappas (Castrol Extreme) bounced back from a difficult first race to take fourth after a tough fight with Eve and Pretorius. With Francois Gerber electing not to contest the rest of the season, the championship has become a much easier goal for Lobb senior. |
