Neil Lobb consolidated his Vodacom Shelby Can-Am championship lead by taking a win and a second place at round six of the Vodacom Power Tour at East London’s historic Grand Prix circuit on Saturday. With a fairly healthy championship lead, the Caltex/Havoline backed driver wasn’t under any real pressure as he qualified on the front row of the grid, less than a tenth of a second behind poleman Donovan Roscoe in the Stanley Tools entry. Alan Eve (Direct Couriers) headed the second row with Formula Ford ace Stevie Morris alongside in the car being used by the Shelby Can-Am Association for development purposes, but was underweight, so everyone moved up a place. With two wins under his belt so far this season, Darryn Lobb (DK Woodcraft) was a tad unhappy with his time and completed the second row as Rui Campos (Carrera/Boltt) headed the third row ahead of Veron Pappas (Castrol Extreme). |

Roscoe got away from the start cleanly and held the lead until the end with Lobb crossing the line two seconds later. Eve was a happy camper as he kept Lobb in his sights to take third with no one in his mirrors. Fourth place went to former Superkart champion Pappas with a three second margin over Campos. Colin Frost brought the Strocam car home in sixth place ahead of Morris (underweight again) and Franz Pretorius (John Abbot Motorsport), the latter pair having enjoyed a close race. Darryn Lobb’s race went pear shaped as a gearbox gremlin crept in and resulted in a ninth place finish. Race two saw Roscoe lead the early stages before Neil Lobb got ahead and went on to win by a second as Darryn Lobb was a distant third, with his usual sparring partner Campos glued to his exhaust. Frost was in the top six again this time bagging fifth in a close finish with Morris whose car went over the scales without drama this time. Wrapping up the top ten were Pappas, Pretorius, Peter Bailey (Fuchs) and Harry Roscoe in the Protea Playing Cards entry. Ruan Pretorius had an eventful race. He went into the race holding second place in the championship standings, but it all went wrong! He missed qualifying due to a gearbox problem and then a fuel pump wiring harness burnt out before the start of race one so he became a reluctant spectator. O on the first lap of the second race he was given a nudge off the track by Morris at the ultra fast Potters corner. He held it all together and was making headway back through the field until Trevor Frost (Strocam Mining) spun in front of him entering the pit straight and he couldn’t avoid contact – race over!
