CHAMPIONSHIP LAURELS IN SIGHT
- 9 October 2006

The penultimate round of the Shelby Can-Am Championship is set to take place at the Phakisa Freeway in Welkom on Saturday 14 October. With a mounting lead in the championship Ruan Pretorius (Castrol EDGE) will be hoping to wrap up this years Shelby title.

However the Lobb family and the Revolution Racing team will be going all out to turn the tables in their favour. Father Neil (Caltex Havoline) and son Darryn (DK Woodcraft) will need to take a clean sweep, while Pretorius will have to falter. In light of recent results it will be a tall ask perhaps, but in motorsport anything can happen and the Revolution Racing team are determined to prove that fact.

But while these three have their mind on the championship laurels they will have to watch out for the ever-improving Jean-Paul Bredenhann (Chem Spec).

Bredenhann took the field be surprise at the previous round of the championship where he dominated the time sheets in spite it being his first ever visit to the Port Elizabeth based circuit. Having already raced at Phakisa Freeway earlier this year, Bredenhann could well be a threat to the front runners.

Donovan Roscoe (Stanley Tools) will be on a high following his second race victory in Port Elizabeth, and will hope to once again battle with the front runners. Team mates Alan Eve (Keliza Group) and Rui Campos (Boltt) will also be eager to challenge at the sharp end of the field.

The ever-improving Chris Hart (Hi-Q Plettenburg Bay) will be looking to show the more seasoned competitors that he is a force to be reckoned with. Challengers will come in the form of Colin Frost (Strocam), Karl Zachau (Driveline Technologies) and Franz Pretorius (Castrol EDGE).

Also coming off a strong performance will be Clare Vale (The Truck Man). To keep her momentum going she will have to fend off the likes of Harry Roscoe (Protea Playing Cards), and Richard Wood (Almar Packaging).

Series newcomers Craig Shorter  (Hollard Insurance), Sam Hammond (Samlin Constructions), Sean Greve (Vulcania Reinforcing Company), Brian Algar (Hemisphere Risk Solutions) and Pierre Brydges (Firzt Realty) will be somewhat familiar with the Phakisa circuit having raced there previously in regional race days and enduro events.

With the 2006 championship reaching its closing stages tensions are higher than ever. A large entry by the Shelby racers will make for plenty of close racing throughout the field in what is South Africa’s fastest single seater series.
