Shelby Can-Am Championship 2006

Lobb on form at Killarney

Neil Lobb (Caltex Havoline) dominated the Shelby Can-Am proceedings at Killarney on 11 March. The reigning champ had a perfect weekend, setting pole position a new lap record and winning both the day’s races.

Heading to the Cape based event Ruan Pretorius (Castrol) topped the championship log and was expected to be Lobb’s main challenger, however when he crossed the scales under weight in Friday’s qualifying session his chances were severely dashed. The Castrol driver was relegated to the back of the grid for both the day’s races and would have to work his way through the field to make any kind of impact.

Lobb had a faultless run in heat 1 ahead of Alan Eve (Keliza Group), Rui Campos (Boltt) and Darryn Lobb (DK Woodcraft). Donavan Roscoe (Stanley Tools) ended the heat in fifth place while Ruan Pretorius worked his way into the top six ahead of father Franz Pretorius (Castrol).

Heat 2 proved to be somewhat more dramatic with Eve and Campos eliminating one another on the opening lap, forcing officials to red flag the race. The race was restarted with Darryn Lobb in hot pursuit of father Neil.

Darryn shadowed his father throughout the race eventually challenging for the lead with two laps to go. Sadly the younger Lobb couldn’t make it stick as he ran wide off the circuit, eventually settling for second place. Donavan Roscoe took the final podium slot ahead of Franz Pretorius, Karl Zachau (Driveline Technologies) and Jean-Paul Bredenhann.

Killarney turned the tables on the championship standings. Reigning Shelby Can-Am champion Neil Lobb had a near perfect weekend, scoring a maximum points tally. Meanwhile archrival Ruan Pretorius had a troublesome weekend and struggled to bring home the points. Lobb now leads the standings with Pretorius his runner-up while Roscoe and Darryn Lobb remain within striking distance.
