Neil Lobb (DK Woodcraft) claimed the overall laurels in the Hollard Shelby Can-Am race, which took place at a cold Phakisa Freeway in Welkom this weekend 28 July. While Lobb took the overall win it was son Darryn Lobb (DK Woodcraft) who set the pace and claimed the victory in heat one, Rui Campos (Hugo Boss) took the honours in the day’s second heat. It was a three horse race in the first heat with Darryn Lobb heading Donavan Roscoe (Stanley Tools) and Neil Lobb. The trio were in close proximity for the duration of the race eventually receiving the chequered flag line a stern. Rui Camos (Hugo Boss) had a clear run to take fourth place ahead of lady racer Jennifer Murray (Bravo Holdings). The event marked Murray’s first appearance in the Hollard Shelby Can-Am series. Jean Paul Bredenhann (BIG FOOT Transporters) crossed the line in sixth place only to be declared underweight and excluded from the results. This meant Alan Eve (BOSS) was promoted to sixth place while Dave Beatie (BACE Structural Engineers) was also declared underweight. Brian Algar (Omnicover) had a strong showing moving from 13th on the grid to seventh in race one, ahead of Craig Shorter (Hollard Insurance) and Robb Wall who qualified 15th and 16th respectively. Harry Roscoe (Protea Playing Cards) headed Colin Frost (Strocam) to the flag while Sean Greve (Vulcania Reinforcing Company) and Karl Zachau (Driveline / Salt) rounded out the field. Heat two saw the Hollard Shelby Can Am competitors pair up with the Altech Porsche Unlimited Class. The large field made for an action packed affair with plenty of wheel to wheel action throughout the field. Altech Porsche Unlimited driver Toby Venter set a blistering pace to cross the chequered flag ahead of the pursuing Hollard Shelby Can-Am pack. Darryn Lobb took the early lead with father Neil Lobb in hot pursuit. The family dynamics were upset when Neil inadvertently collected Darryn while trying to pass backmarkers. Darryn came off worst and was eventually forced into retirement. This left Rui Campos in prime position to take over the lead. Neil Lobb recovered to take second place ahead of Jean Paul Bredenhann and Alan Eve. Jennifer Murray finished heat two in sixth place and, thanks to a consistent run on her maiden Can-Am event, scored third place overall. Sam Hammond was seventh ahead of Brian Algar, Harry Roscoe and Craig Shorter. Rob Wall, who joined the series earlier this year, had another good run moving from 18th on the grid to 11th at the finish line. Dave Beattie crossed the line ahead of Donavan Roscoe who struggled with mechanical difficulties, Colin Frost recovered from a spin to finish ahead of Sean Greve and Richard Wood. The next round of the Hollard Shelby Can Am Championship at Kyalami Grand Prix circuit on 8 September, with only three rounds remaining in this year’s championship battle the gloves are sure to be off. |
