Darryn Lobb (DK Woodcraft) put in a faultless performance, at Kyalami Grand Prix circuit on Saturday 3 November, to secure the 2007 Hollard Shelby Can-Am Championship. Lobb’s consistant performance throughout the season saw him emerge as the favourite to take this year’s title. His nearest challenge came from Donavan Roscoe (Stanley Tools) while Neil Lobb (DK Woodcraft) also had a mathematical chance at securing the title. Roscoe pulled out all the stops in his final challenge for the crown, taking pole position and two race wins. However despite his determined efforts Lobb had still done enough to walk away with the 2007 crown and his first ever national championship. Keeping it in the family father Neil Lobb took the season honours in the Masters Championship category. “I’m over the moon,” said an elated Darryn Lobb after the race. “We’ve worked really hard for this. I knew what I had to do today, I managed to steer clear of any trouble, and it’s paid off. Thanks to my sponsors as well as the team for all their hard work throughout the season.” In heat 1 Roscoe’s closest opposition came from Chris Hart (Hi-Q Plettenburg Bay), who put in another strong performance to take second place ahead of Darryn Lobb in a lonely third place. Rui Campos (Hugo Boss) took fourth place ahead of Jennifer Murray (Bravo Holdings), Neil Lobb (DK Woodcraft) and Alan Eve (Hugo Boss). The midfield battle saw Karl Zachau (Driveline / Salt) get the better of Sean Greve (Vulcania Reinforcing), Colin Frost (Strocam) and Dave Beattie (BACE Structural Engineers). Brian Algar (Firedart Engineering Underwriters) recovered from a spin to finish in an eventual 12th place ahead of Rob Wall (Vered Estates) Harry Roscoe (Protea Playing Cards) Richard Wood (Almar Packaging) and Trevor Frost (Strocam Mining). Newcomers to the series Darren Nathan (Online Direct) and Gary Hulme had a tough initiation with mechanical difficulties putting an end to their efforts in the closing stages of the race. In Race 2 the Hollard Shelby Can-Am competitors shared the track with Altech Porsche Unlimited contestants to make up a 30-car grid. The Porsches of Toby Venter and Franz Pretorius made light work of the 4.2km Kyalami circuit to take the overall victory. In the Shelby category it was Roscoe who again dominated proceedings this time ahead of Darryn Lobb. Alan Eve took the final podium slot ahead of Jennifer Murray whose efforts saw her take third place overall for the day. Neil Lobb took fifth place ahead of Colin Frost and Sean Greve, while the midfield battle saw Shorter head Algar, Roscoe, Wall and Zachau. Newcomer Hulme had a steady run in the second heat to emerge in 13th place ahead of Trevor Frost. 2007 HOLLARD SHELBY CAN AM CHAMPIONSHIP 1 Donavan Roscoe Stanley Tools 2 Darryn Lobb DK Woodcraft 3 Jennifer Murray Bravo Holdings 4 Alan Eve Hugo Boss 5 Neil Lobb DK Woodcraft 6 Chris Hart Hi-Q Plettenburg Bay |
