The Hollard Shelby Can-Am series made its 2007 championship debut at Wesbank Raceway this weekend. The popular Sports Car series provided plenty of action in both of the day’s heats. Former Shelby Champion Neil Lobb (DK Woodcraft) dominated the day’s proceedings taking victory in both races. Lobb’s biggest challenge came from Donovan Roscoe (Stanley Tools). Roscoe lead race 1 from the lights but Lobb soon closed the gap and found a way past in the closing stages. Rui Campos (Boltt) claimed third position ahead of Darryn Lobb (DK Woodcraft), who had an eventful day’s racing. Alan Eve (Kelizia Group) was fifth ahead of JP Bredenhann. Chris Hart (Hi-Q Plettenburg Bay) fought his way through the field from last on the grid to finish in the top six. Craig Shorter (Hollard) headed Franz Pretorius (Castrol EDGE), Sean Greve (Vulcania Reinforcing Company) and Sam Hammond (Ceramic World). Richard Wood (Almar Packaging), Pierre Brydges (Firzt Realty) and Harry Roscoe (Protea Playing Cards) rounded out the field. Race 2 saw Donovan Roscoe once again lead the charge. The determined driver looked set for victory until a faulty throttle cable put an end to his day's racing. As Roscoe’s yellow Stanley Tools racer limped back to the pits, Lobb inherited the lead and took his second race win of the day. Eve avoided the first lap mayhem and went on to finish second ahead of Campos, and Bredenhann. Darryn Lobb’s troubles continued as he dropped down the pecking order in the opening stages. The young championship hopeful fought his way back to claim an eventual fifth place. Peter Bailey (Bailey Edwards) had a good showing claiming sixth place in the day’s second heat, he was followed by Greve, Shorter and Pretorius. Sam Hammond head Colin Frost (Strocam) Harry Roscoe and Richard Wood. Neil Lobb now heads the championship log but he won’t have long to revel in his glory as the Hollard Shelby Can-Am’s head to Durban to participate in this weekend’s A1 Grand Prix proceedings. The Shelby series will be one of three supporting categories at the Durban event and will race on Saturday and Sunday.
