Former stars add spice to championship race

Round 9 Zwartkops preview 11/10/08

Last season’s Execuline Shelby Can-Am championship was fought between Darren Lobb (DK Woodcraft) and Donavan Roscoe (Execuline) with Lobb eventually coming out on top to take the crown.

The two will be back in the fray at Zwartkops for the penultimate round of the 2008 championship on 11 October and could play a huge role in the championship battle. Lobb has been earning his keep in Production Cars while the Durban Street Race has been Roscoe’s only outing of the year.

With two rounds remaining Rui Campos (Hugo Boss) is only one point clear of Chris Hart in the Plettenberg Bay Hi-Q entry so there’s a very strong chance that Lobb and Roscoe’s performances will affect the outcome of the championship. Ruan Pretorius (Castrol) is also a former champion, who could be mixing it with the pack at the front.

Jennifer Murray in the other Execuline entry has come on strongly with a string of wins and now holds third place only 26 points behind Hart while the vastly experienced Alan Eve (Sunshine Testing) lies fourth after a consistent season.

Brian Algar (Firedart) had a costly retirement from heat two at Phakisa which allowed Durban domiciled Guy Botterill (Fragram Tools) to narrow the gap to a mere two points. Don’t discount Dave Beattie (Dura Soletanche Bachy) who is determined to end the season in the top six and desperately wants a win before the end of the year.

Sean Greve (Vulcania Reinforcing) suffered a costly engine failure at Phakisa but should be back up to speed at Zwartkops.

Other drivers to watch are Bertil Hoffman (IOU Music) and Durbanite Bryant van der Merwe (Chemspec). Both are in their debut season of big league racing and have driven like seasoned campaigners. Another newcomer in the mix is Thomas Reib (Intrertrans Oil).

Colin Frost (Strocam) has been showing a good turn of speed in recent races while necomers this year Sun Moodley (Bigfoot Express) and Hanno Pengilly have quietly got on with the job of learning the ropes.
