Reib scores first win
- 13 October 2008

Rui Campos strengthened his grip on the Execuline Shelby Can-Am championship by taking a win and a second at the Spanjaard Raceday at Zwartkops on Saturday but it was Thomas Reib who stole the show after scoring his maiden win in race two.

Qualifying was nothing short of spectacular as four cars were covered by less than a tenth of a second.

Pole went to Campos (Hugo Boss) ahead of Alan Eve (Sunshine Testing) while Brian Algar (Firedart) and Darryn Lobb (DK Woodcraft) were on row to with Donavan Roscoe (Execuline) and Sean Greve (Vulcania Reinforcing) making up the top six.

A clean start saw Campos take the lead but on lap two 2007 champion Darryn Lobb (DK Woodcraft) suffered a broken driveshaft and the field was forced to take avoiding action as he suddenly slowed which gave Campos an early break. Then Dave Beattie (Dura) tapped title contender Chris Hart (Hi-Q Plettenberg Bay) into a spin at the hairpin and both retired which further delayed the pack. More drama was provided by Algar who spun and forced Execuline backed Jennifer Murray to take avoiding action.

Campos was clear of all the drama and went on to take a comfortable six second win ahead of Alan Eve with 2006 champion Ruan Pretorius in third place. Fourth went to Greve while Murray worked hard to keep Guy Botterill (Fragram Tools) at bay and take fifth.

As is the norm in Execuline Shelby Can-Am events, the grid for race two was based on the top eight fastest laps of the first race in a reverse order and it was Bedfordview racer Thomas Reib who led from start to finish to give the Intertrans Oils team its first race win. It was also the former Porsche racer’s first success at this level and he was just over three seconds clear of Campos who had worked hard to get through the pack and then pass Algar shortly before the end.

An entertaining battle for the minor positions raged throughout and Greve held off former champions Pretorius and Lobb who completed the top six in what was an entertaining and close race that kept fans glued to their seats.

With Hart retiring from the opening race and only managing 12th in race two, Campos has almost written his name on the big trophy.
