A1GP aces add spice to championship race
- 28 October 2008

Dutch A1GP driver Jeroen Bleekemolen will race the final round of the Execuline Shelby Can-Am championship at Kyalami at the Investchem Pro-Tour event on 8 November.

With the South African round of the A1GP series taking place at Kyalami the 26-year old who started the Netherlands season opening A1GP round from pole position will be using the event to get some circuit knowledge.

The deal was put together by good friend Bertil Hoffman and Bleekemolen, the reigning Porsche SuperCup champion, will be driving the DK Woodcraft car prepared by Revolution Racing.

Another wild card to keep an eye on is South Africa’s tenacious A1GP Rookie driver Wesleigh Orr who used new tyres to maximum advantage to claim a win at Phakisa. This time he will be out in the Execuline entry which was raced by Craig Shorter earlier in the season.

Rui Campos (Hugo Boss) needs only a handful of points to claim his first title after a season long battle with Chris Hart in the Plettenberg Bay Hi-Q entry. Hart saw his title hopes nosedive when he had a race to forget at the last round. He’s not going to give up without a fight but any mistakes could see his runner-up position under threat.

Jennifer Murray in the other Execuline entry has come on strongly with a string of wins and now holds third place only 26 points behind Hart while the vastly experienced Alan Eve (Sunshine Testing) is only one point behind her. The gentlemanly notion of ‘Ladies first’ means absolutely nothing in motorsport.

Completing the top six are Brian Algar (Firedart) who had a steady day at Zwartkops to extend his gap over Durban domiciled Guy Botterill (Fragram Tools) to seven points.

There’s a very strong chance that former champion Ruan Pretorius (Castrol) could also upset the plans of others. He’s capable of winning and he seems to have got his car on pace. Another danger man is Donavan Roscoe who is fast, but hasn’t raced much this year.

Don’t discount Dave Beattie (Dura) who always goes well at Kyalami and is determined to end the season in the top six, He desperately wants a win before the end of the year and could deliver.

Another newcomer in the mix is Thomas Reib (Intertrans Oil) who scored his first win at Zwartkops last month after a faultless performance in the second race which he led from start to finish.

Sean Greve (Vulcania Reinforcing) suffered a costly engine failure at Phakisa but was back up to speed at Zwartkops and will be fighting among the top six at Kyalami.

Other drivers to watch are Bertil Hoffman (IOU Music) and Durbanite Bryant van der Merwe (Chemspec). Both are in their debut season of big league racing and have driven like seasoned campaigners. Colin Frost (Strocam) has been showing a good turn of speed in recent races while newcomers this year Sun Moodley (Bigfoot Express) and Hanno Pengilly have quietly got on with the job of learning the ropes.

Smart money will be on Campos to take the title, but there aren’t many willing to put money on predicting the winners of each race.
