Sunday’s qualifying for the second Execuline
Shelby Can-Am race at the Durban A1GP motorsport
extravaganza saw Darryn Lobb claim the all important pole
position which put him on the inside line for the tight 180
degree hairpin first corner. Rui
Campos (Hugo Boss), who was on pole for yesterday, lined up
second with Alan Eve (Hugo Boss) and Donovan Roscoe (Spanjaard)
on row two. Roscoe in Brian Algar’s car after his suffered
heavy damage yesterday. Former champion Neil Lobb (Vulcania
Reinforcing) and Craig Shorter (Execuline) complete the top
six.
Lobb led from the start, but it was Eve
who showed the most bravery and outbraked the pair in front
of him to wrest the lead at the hairpin and lead for half a
lap until Lobb squeezed ahead at the swimming pool complex.
The big loser in all this was Campos, who was forced wide at
turn one and slipped back to fifth.
Campos fought back with controlled
aggression clawed his way up to second and from then on he
and Lobb swapped the lead almost every lap. |
Next was a gaggle consisting of Roscoe,
Neil Lobb and Shorter, but then Roscoe slipped back a few
places. In the confusion Neil Lobb made up some ground and
set about hunting down Eve who’d lost a few lengths to the
leaders.
On lap six there was drama as Shorter spun
at the hairpin and gently nosed the wall and further round
the lap Neil Lobb’s hopes of a good result vanished with a
spin. A lap later Hanno Pengilly lost his engine cover.
Meanwhile Lobb and Campos continued their
entertaining duel but when the race ended after 10 hectic
laps it was Lobb who took the win by a mere 0.259 seconds
from Campos with Eve holding on for third ahead of Jennifer
Murray (Execuline) who drove sensibly and kept out of
trouble as Peter Bailey (TDF) and Colin Frost (Strocam)
filled the top six.
