The second Shelby Can-Am race
at Zwartkops on Saturday was one that fans will
be talking about for a long time.
Friday’s qualifying saw
former champion Darryn Lobb in the DK
Woodcraft/Imperial backed car take the all
important pole position to and he had Brian
Algar (Thuthuka Welding) sharing the front row
with him. Row two was headed by Capetonian
Bertil Hoffman (IOU Music) as reigning champ Rui
Campos in the Hugo Boss car was fourth.
From pole position Lobb was
in command from and after 12-laps took the flag
a comfortable 2 ˝ seconds clear of Campos who
had Algar hot on his heels.
A few seconds adrift was Alan
Eve (Phakisa) with Bertil Hoffman (IOU Music)
and Thomas Reib (Intertrans Oil) completing the
top six. Hoffman had finished ahead of Eve on
the road but was docked one position because of
a startline infringement. Dave Beattie (Dura)
and Craig Shorter (Execuline) were seventh and
eighth.
Driving the Vulcania
Reinforcing car usually raced by Sean Greve,
Greg Walker spun his chances away on the opening
lap but recovered to finish 10th.
Panel-Rite/Bigfoot Express teammates Jean-Paul
Bredenhann and Sun Moodley were also in the wars
and dropped to the tail end of the field.
After behaving impeccably in
the first race, it seemed as though they all
went totally mad in race two.
Reib took full advantage of
the partially inverted grid for race two and led
from the start until mid distance when Eve took
over. Eve only led for a lap before running wide
at turn one which allowed Reib back into the
lead which he held until the end to repeat his
win at the same circuit last year.
Another steady drive from
Algar resulted in second place ahead of Lobb who
lost his nose in a skirmish with a late braking
Eve at the top of the hill which resulted in Eve
retiring. That left Craig Shorter (Execuline) to
take fourth ahead of Hoffman and Campos, the
latter being hampered by flapping rear bodywork
caused by assaulting Dave Beattie (Dura) at the
hairpin shortly before half distance.
Walker impressed with seventh
place as fellow newcomer, Durbanite Andrew
Strike (Strike1) was next in what was only his
second ever race.
The next round of the Shelby
Can Am championship is at Kyalami on 30 May. |
