   Background

The Shelby Can-Am class is currently in its fourth season of racing in 2008. The class history however goes a long way back, specifically in the previous six years; that is since its inception, as VSP.

The name VSP derives from “Vodacom Sports Prototype”, in recognition of the sponsor who had most generously funded the creation of the class, and supported it until the end of 2005. It was Vodacom who masterminded and funded the purchase and importation of 28 Shelby Can-Am open single-seater sports cars, and swopped , car for car, with the owners of cars in an existing local sports car class known as Sports 2000. Thus it was that overnight two new sports car classes were created, the VSP class and a development class for previously disadvantaged individuals using the Sports 2000 cars. This event was unprecedented in the annals of South African motor racing.

With the agreement of Vodacom the name of the cars was changed in 2005 to Shelby Can-Am. This was done for two reasons. Firstly this was originally the name of the car, and secondly the Shelby name is well known both locally and internationally.

The class has been recognised by Motorsport South Africa as a National category, and produces a National champion every year. As such, it takes part in all the National Championship events at all major tracks in South Africa.

Shelby Can-Am Racing has a new Naming Right Sponsor for 2008. We will be known as Execuline Shelby Can-Am Racing for the 2008 season. In conjunction with the new sponsor a new body design has been launched, bringing the visual aspect of the car, right up to current Le Mans trends The car has also benefited from clutch and exhaust upgrades and will soon receive upgraded springs and dampers.
