   The Cars

The Shelby Can-Am was designed and built by the world-renowned Carroll Shelby to race in the Can-Am series of sports car races, and was recognised by the Sports Car Club of America as a junior class for the more prestigious forms of racing such as Indy and Nascar. The chassis as they were imported arrived complete with the original Dodge 3.3 litre V6 engines. The body however is a purely South African design and is manufactured locally in lightweight fibreglass.

Over the years modifications and updates have been made to the cars to keep them in the forefront of motor racing. The most important change has been the replacement of the ageing Dodge engines with the more powerful and more reliable Nissan 3.5 lire V6 engines. This too was a coup for the class as it has now been racing for three years with engines that are only now commercially available in South Africa in the Nissan 350Z.

Since the beginning the class has looked at local manufacture, to the point where now virtually all the parts are now made locally, which has enormous benefits in keeping the costs of racing within limits.

The cars are the fastest single-seater class in the country, and their reliability has been proved over and over in endurance races through the years.

The class is a “single-formula” class, meaning that components that can give a competitive advantage (such as engine, gearbox, electronics, shock absorbers and tyres) are strictly controlled. This means that theoretically the cars are identical in performance and that driving talent and experience are what makes the difference. Costs are minimised as is not possible to out-spend the opposition to gain an advantage.
