Doug Serrurier

Dec 1920 - May 2006

Legendary South African motor racing personality, Doug Serrurier, passed away in Johannesburg on Sunday 4th June.

Doug was an enterprising South African motor racing driver and car builder, who built his own F1 special, the LDS*, powered by an Alfa Romeo four-cylinder engine driving through a Porsche five-speed gearbox. He raced in 3 South African Grand Prixs in 1962, 1963 and 1965.

Prior to his Formula 1 career, Doug enjoyed a distinguished international Speedway career alongside riders such as Buddy Fuller, Henry Long and Roy Bester.

In addition to his achievements in single-seater racing, when he challenged other South African legends such as John Love, Sam Tingle, Dave Charlton and Jackie Pretorius, Doug was a stalwart on the sports car racing scene, particularly in his competitive Lola Ford T70.

*LDS is the name given to various single-seater racing specials built for the South African F1 Championship. The "specials" were built by Louis Douglas Serrurier, hence the name. The Mark 1 and Mark 2 models were based on Cooper designs, whilst the Mark 3 was based on the Brabham BT11.
