   Frequently asked questions

Q: How fast are these cars?
A: The longest and fastest circuit in S.A. is East London and the cars reach approximately 260 km/ph there.

Q: With the open top does your head get buffeted a lot ?
A: Only at certain circuits like Killarney and East London but we can fit a small Perspex wind deflector to the front of the cockpit which sorts out the problem. It only has to be about  20 or 30 millimeters high!

Q: Have you ever had a big crash?
A: These cars where designed in the States to run on the long oval circuits and you know what huge crashes they can have! They are incredibly strong and only one chassis has been destroyed in S.A. but that was in a fire. The chassis is designed with ‘crash boxes’ to absorb any impact and therefore no chassis has yet been damaged in any accident in S.A. in spite of some huge accidents. The worst injuries have been torn ligaments and a broken finger and wrist.

Q: How expensive are they to race?
A:

Base Cost:

You can buy a decent Shelby with trailer and 2 sets of spare rims for about R320 000. There is a car  available for R220 000, but needs some work, and a car available for R350 000 that is in pristine condition with recently overhauled engine etc. So you generally get what you pay for, and most cars racing at the moment would be the equivalent of the R320 000 sort of car.

Memberships and Licence:

You are required to be a member of the Shelby Association at an annual cost of R3 000, and you will have to get a national competition licence at about R2 000 pa including some medical cover.

Entry fees;

We currently do between 8 and 10 races per season, at an entry fee cost of currently R1 000 per race.

Race prep and track support:

The going rate to have your car with one of the established teams (DAW Racing, Revolution racing or John Abbot Motorsport) varies between R12 000 per race to R13 500 per month. This may be negotiable but not significantly so. This will give you a “arrive and drive” scenario, where your car is housed, prepped, delivered and supported at the track. Labour for crashes is included, but parts obviously excluded. Delivery to away national races is charged at extra, as is the cost of travel and accommodation/subsistence. Cost to CT/EL for the car roughly R5 000 per race, and travel etc for mechanics/engineers about R2 500 per race.

Tyres:

You will be allowed 6 new sets of tyres per season to race on, at about R8 500 per set. Any other sets bought for testing etc will be at R12 500 per set, but most top drivers make do for a season on the 6 sets.

Fuel:

You can budget about R360.00 per 20 l of racing fuel. A race weekend can use up to 5 tins of fuel, and obviously the more you test the more the fuel will cost.

Spares/Accidents:

The cost of repairing a Shelby in the event of a crash is relatively cheap if compared to other forms of racing. A big prang taking two complete corners off the car may cost about R50 000 to fix. The engines are pretty reliable, and a full rebuild if necessary (some motors have run 5 years with no rebuild) will cost about R50 000, depending if it is preventative or after a breakdown. The car may need a new clutch per season at about R9 000 and maybe 2 sets of brake pads at R1800 per set. Other than the above the cars are pretty reliable. An entire new body will cost in the order of R25 000, however it is in 5 parts so generally only certain sections get damaged.

Generally minimums:

Race prep                            R96 000

Licences                               R  5 000

Tyres                                     R51 000

Fuel                                       R12 000

Travel etc(Jhb)                  R16 000

Entry fees                           R8 0000

Spares/Accidents             R75 000*              Could be higher/lower

Total                                      R263 000

Q: Do you win money?
A:

Wow if only !!! NO we don’t but obviously the more you win the easier to get sponsorship and I guess that is money. Our series sponsor is Vodacom and they pay our TV package , MSA license fees etc and cover our administration expenses. We employ a full time secretary. Goodyear subsidise our tyre pricing substantially. They also contribute a set of racing slicks which goes is awarded to the driver who wins a draw at evety event. S21 ( International management consultants) contribute to the drivers start money. This figure amounts to approximately R 600 000. this year and covers entries fees, pit hire and the balance then pays out to our drivers at that event.
